Why is my baby refusing the bottle / showing bottle aversion?

Babies don’t refuse for no reason. When feeding doesn’t feel right, whether because of flow, swallowing coordination, discomfort, or stress they quickly learn to avoid it. The more that pressure comes in (because understandably you're feeling pretty desperate by now for them to feed) the more entrenched the refusal becomes.
That’s why refusal or aversion can look like pushing the bottle away, crying as soon as they see it, or shutting down mid-feed. It’s their way of saying “this doesn’t feel safe.”

Is bottle refusal the same as bottle aversion?

They overlap, but they aren’t identical. Bottle refusal might be short-term, like after illness or a sudden change; left unmanaged it can escalate into full aversion. Bottle aversion is when feeding itself has become stressful or even unsafe (milk going into their airway or making it difficult for them to breathe) and your baby has learned to avoid it to keep themselves safe. The signs can look the same, arching, crying, refusing feeds, but the way through depends on which pattern has taken hold.
